Michael King has decided to forgo the remaining two seasons on his San Diego Padres contract, choosing instead to enter free agency, according to Yahoo Sports.
The move comes off a strong year in which King ranked 10th among National League starting pitchers with a 3.21 ERA. He was especially sharp in the postseason, allowing just one run across 14 innings against the Milwaukee Brewers, who went on to win the World Series, in the NLDS.
By opting out, King is wagering that his performance this season and in the playoffs will earn him a more lucrative deal on the open market than what remained on his existing contract with San Diego.
