Michigan Democratic Representative Haley Stevens delivered a shock to her party on Sunday, throwing her endorsement behind Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers instead of her own party's nominee, Abdul Al-Sayed, according to France 24.
The move comes just two days ahead of the US midterm elections, with control of Congress hanging in the balance. Al-Sayed had defeated Stevens in the Democratic primary earlier this year, making her backing of Rogers an unusually public break from her party.
France 24 reported that the endorsement gives President Donald Trump's Republicans an unexpected lift in a race widely viewed as pivotal to determining which party holds the Senate majority. The defection has rattled Democrats in Michigan as they scramble to shore up support in the race's final hours.
