Brazil has a new four-year presidential term ahead for Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, after he defeated Flávio Bolsonaro, son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, in the country's election. Bolsonaro's own party has accepted the result, but he personally has refused to concede, according to NPR.

The holdout comes as Flávio Bolsonaro faces a separate legal fight. He's under investigation for alleged money laundering and has been barred from leaving Brazil. The BBC reports that authorities cancelled his passports this week after he failed to surrender them as ordered.

President Trump weighed in from Washington, calling the Brazilian vote "rigged" without presenting evidence, according to NPR. The comment drew attention well beyond Brazil's borders.

Why it matters beyond Brazil

Lula's win is being read as a stabilizing moment for BRICS, the bloc of major emerging economies that includes Brazil. Al Jazeera reports the result may have spared the group an internal rift that a Bolsonaro victory could have triggered, at a moment when Trump is working to reassert US influence abroad.

Vast View News will keep following the standoff over Flávio Bolsonaro's concession and his legal case.
