A staff member of the United Nations Human Rights Office has died in Houthi custody in Yemen after being held for more than two years, according to Sky News. The UN's human rights chief is now demanding an investigation into the circumstances of his death.
The staffer, identified by Al Jazeera as Mohammad el-Shami, had been detained since June 2024. He was among numerous UN and NGO workers in Yemen who were accused by Houthi authorities of spying at the time of their detentions.
The UN has long maintained that such detentions of its personnel were arbitrary and unjustified. No further details on the cause of death or the status of the investigation have been released.
