The Seattle Mariners are set to name Jason Kanzler as their next manager, making him the 22nd person to hold the job in franchise history, according to Yahoo Sports. The move ends Dan Wilson's tenure in the role.
Kanzler arrives from the Chicago Cubs, where he served as director of player development, Yahoo Sports reported. Notably, this will be his first managerial job at any level of professional baseball, a detail that has raised eyebrows given his lack of name recognition among fans.
Sporting News noted the hire is unusual precisely because Kanzler is largely unknown outside front-office circles, and outlined several reasons the Mariners see him as the right fit to lead the club into its next chapter despite the absence of on-field managerial experience.
