Kansas coach Bill Self says he plans to have transfer forward Trey Kaufman-Renn ready to go for the Jayhawks' season opener, according to Sporting News. The former Purdue standout, however, is dealing with several complications that could affect how much he's actually able to contribute right out of the gate.
According to the report, Kaufman-Renn is nursing an ankle issue and has not been fully built up in conditioning, raising questions about his readiness for high-level minutes immediately. Compounding the uncertainty is an eligibility case that has yet to be resolved, meaning his status for the opener is not guaranteed even if his body is ready.
Self's comments suggest Kansas is banking on Kaufman-Renn as a key piece of this season's roster, but the combination of health and eligibility question marks means the team may be leaning on him before he's fully prepared to play.
