The College Football Playoff committee released its first rankings of the season, and the SEC came out looking like the clear beneficiary, according to Sporting News and Yahoo Sports. Alabama and Ohio State were cited among the biggest winners in the initial top 25 reveal, with the SEC's overall strength fueling talk of what Sporting News called a return of so called "SEC bias" in how the committee views the conference.
Not every traditional power fared as well. Sporting News reported that Notre Dame and Ohio State are now sitting in precarious playoff positions, meaning either team could see its postseason hopes take a serious hit with just one more loss the rest of the way.
Both outlets framed the release as an early gut check for contenders nationwide, with the committee's choices setting the tone for how every remaining game will be scrutinized heading into the back half of the season.
